Q: The clouds have parted. We have finally gotten our interview
with Donald Rumsfeld. I don’t know if I can speak, at this point.
I’m going to have to just…
Rumsfeld: [Laughs.]
Q: … turn the mike over to someone else.
Rumsfeld: No, no. [Laughs.]
Groopie Groopie slurpyslurpy laughy laughy
Q: Thank you...
Rumsfeld: I’m delighted to do it.
Really, George made me do it.
Q: Secretary Rumsfeld... have 115 of our soldiers who’ve died...referring
to our policy with Israel as “poison”...
I mean, like just because Israel has been fighting for the land the
US and Brits carved out for them after WW II with no sight of ending.
Rumsfeld: Well, I guess everybody has a right to say what they
think...
Tell that to John Aschroft (the man who lost his own election to
a dead man) -oops too late he's been fired.
When you have people being killed and wounded in coalition forces and
hostages being taken...to find a way to negotiate that away.
But Georgie didn't have time for that!
I think realistically the terrorists are not the kind of people who
are going to be negotiating.
Well, we really didn't try - kinda like the English and Northern
Ireland.
And certainly, the remnants of Saddam Hussein’s intelligence organization
and his special Republican Guard and his senior Baathists are unlikely
to be willing to toss in the towel.
And certainly not Iraqi citizens who's country is being bombed back
into the dark ages.
So I think that a more correct approach might be to think of it as something
that requires both. It requires a recognition of what’s taking place
on the ground,
and what is taking place with prisoners - being flown to countries
that will allow for torture - even though we know when a person is tortured
they will tell you anything to stop the pain - we could call it revenge.
but also a willingness to recognize that people who are anxious to go
out and kill innocent men, women and children need to be stopped.
Amen! No matter how sel righteous the claim
Q: And... “The Fallujah Stakes,” ...the U.S. is losing its
resolve and simply wants out.” ...
Rumsfeld: Well...a fair risk...calculation...they have to weigh
the disadvantages that accrue to the coalition as a result of delay against
the disadvantages that accrue to the coalition...
The troops fired the first shot in Fallujah and killed several children.
Those are tough calculations... they have not gone in and physically
removed all those terrorists, at least thus far.
And we had to delay the assult until after the election which gave
some of those "terrorists" time to run to fight again (kinda like the Brits
felt towards American Revolutionaries.
Q: If we signal, though, to the insurgents, the terrorists – we
just prefer to call them thugs and murderers –
It eases our conscience.
...serious effort not to target holy sites
Throw that one out we've got a puppet to put in power, again.
Rumsfeld: Well, you’re right... If they’re attacking U.S.
forces, we simply have to go after those people, regardless of where they
are.
If there were no US forces the attacks would stop.
Q: But then if we do attack those sites...military is having to
go through because it seems like they’re damned if they do and they’re
damned if they don’t. And the critics are just going to come out
of the woodwork, no matter what they do.
Wrong! It is not the military what will be damned - critics have
been protesting this Iraq war BEFORE it was begun.
Rumsfeld: Well, I think, Laura, the reality is we’re being accused
through lies – vicious lies – on Al Jazeera and Al Arabiyah of doing these
things, even though we’re not doing them at all.
A true liar's defense.
Even when we’re not trying... I think we’re on the right track.
The right track for another train wreck.
Q: Well, that brings us to the point about Al Jazeera itself...
the communications arm of al Qaeda...is there anything we can do about
that or just – or nothing?
R: Well, we’re doing everything we can.
A camer man for Al Jazerra was killed by a "sharp-shooter" and we
have kicked them out of Iraq and we have stopped their free press.
Q: ...one final question. The issue of the draft has been
floated in
Rumsfeld: We’re not. I know of nobody who is studying re-instituting
the draft at the present time.
That's part of how we got in trouble in Vietnam - conscriptes (i.e.
draftees) are more likely to speak their mind.
Q: Yeah.
Rumsfeld: … of attracting and retaining the number of people we
need without using compulsion.
That's why we are keeping some troops past their legal departure
date.
All we have to do is to increase the incentives...and we can – if we
need a larger military, we certainly are capable of paying for a larger
military.
Now that us rich people have a tax cut the burden for "paying" is
on the working class.
Q: Well, Secretary Rumsfeld....It’s not easy doing what you’re
doing on a daily basis. Thank you so much for joining us.
...NeoCons
Rumsfeld: Thank you. It’s good to be with you.
Now I'm off to take my soma.
