\nthe tone was “risking arrest”
\noutside the gates lots of private
\ngroups passing time chatting
\nat tables of 4 – 6 – looking
\naround for someone with an unused cell phone
\non the table i asked to borrow it
\nas she pushed it towards me i said
\n“It’s a local call.”
\nshe pulled back the phone looked
\nat me suspiciously and asked,
\n“You haven’t been tested, have you?”
\ni started to explain i was a nurse
\nand needed to call a friend to pick me up
\nno one was listening I pounded the table
\nand said, “I’m desperate!”
