Put the celebrations on hold

By Jonathan Tobin

The war against Israel isn't over

"Last week's vote by Israel's Cabinet to proceed with the withdrawal from Gaza and four settlements in the West Bank solidified a trend that seemed to confirm our greatest hopes."

Does Israel leave Gaza because Christians in Lebanon are clamoring for Syria to leave?

"Friday's terrorist attack in Tel Aviv that took the lives of four Israelis, put the idea of a lasting cease-fire in perspective."

Does it smell anything like an assassination in Beirut?

"...the four-year-old war of attrition against Israel appeared to have ended...."

And the 47 year war? The real question is who's directing this game of Go?

There will be those who will say the Tel Aviv attack means nothing.

No truly spiritual being would say ANY attack means nothing.

"...In particular, the Bush administration which is heavily invested in Abbas may feel it has no choice but to take this position."

We the people are trying to push cowboy Bush into neutral and effective in two sided dialogue.

"...Islamic Jihad and Hamas despite the very considerable military forces at his disposal

And the very considerable military forces at Israel's disposal? It's okay for Israel to arm itself with WMD's even when they too are against a UN resolution?

"...supporters of Israel must not forget: The war against Israel's existence still isn't over."

because

"...future of Jerusalem that Sharon has promised he will not divide in order to hand over part of Israel's capital to the Palestinians."

So Solomon decided "Cut the baby in half." Which is deadly to a baby but not to a piece of land unless no compromise is found in which case the children of both peoples keep dying.

While cynics believe that, having given in on Gaza

Because it was not viable as an occupied land.

"...Sharon will cave in on Jerusalem..."

Or Abbas will cave in on Jerusalem?

Cave in is not the same as concession.

Palestinian statehood as inevitable. He is right to do so. But he, with the support of the overwhelming majority of Israelis and Americans, is willing to do so only in exchange for peace and secure borders for Israel.

So it all comes down to who controls Jerusalem?

"...the international campaign of delegitimization of Israel and Zionism hasn't ceased."

And when they are the chosen people of God who can argue with that? There is no international campaign against the Jews. There is an international campaign against perpetual war. The millions of people that went to the streets from countries around the globe and protested the current war in Iraq is evidence of the growing hunger for peace on earth.

Israel's security fence.

In the shadow of the Great Wall of China, the Berlin Wall...

"As we learned to our sorrow...their right to self-determination in their own land."
