A poem a day into the millennium

THUNDER IN THE LAKE
for Justin
here at the surface
vision halts
numb in its depths
the lake submerges possibility
under this frowning reflection
the hidden mystery
dragon sleeping
with its nose upon its tail
clouds arising
like breath upon the mirror
bring forth proof of life
new in the delicate sycamore leaves
bright in the cottonwood canopy
steady as the sky's face
bright in the folds of clear water
the covenant
is honored best by tearing off
the bark the wind keeps worrying
discard the rinds of artifice
strip cognition to compassionate bone
leave one pure witness that withers not away
