PRETTY POETRY
People tend to tell me
that
What I write is not poetry because:
it doesn't rhyme
it doesn't fall into even meter
it doesn't follow easily recognizable form
it doesn't conform to accepted standards
And moreover that:
it doesn't make them feel 'real' happy
or even
leaves them feeling somewhat uncomfortable
It causes them to think about
things they'd rather not consider
and a myriad of other excuses
But the more they complain
the more I realize that - -
I am getting to them!
And if it doesn't get to them
it isn't poetry, no matter
how 'pretty' it looks on the page.
