My Good Neighbour Joe

the goodest part
was his teaching me
by example
how to be a good neighbour

he never presumed
how i should live my life

a moment ago i was crying
for the loss of friends
who just drifted away
for reasons of their own
i displeased them
and then i smiled

my loyal friends

heaven knows how many times
i’ve caused the few who remain
various shades of discomfort
or mental pain
and in my life stay
thanks and praises

ol’ Joe
my neighbour
sometimes smiling

makes me smile.

My Little Demon, the Driver

takes me down to Shanty Town
doing absolutely nothing
like paying attention
steps 1, 2, 3
waltz me around again Charlie
remembering done before
take me around the world
in and out the windows

home again in Indiana
they don’t want me anymore
Lord knows I can go back there
done wiped that slates right off’a da floor

the Lady she says,
“We should pay the same as all the tax-payers.”
the Old Woman says,
“We know there are holes in our welfare system,
please don’t take everything intitled,
if we all need less we all get better.”
hear that Mr. Wall Street?
the Shes are saying “We All”

Mr. President
has spent three years, nine months
compromising with Republicans
he has earned the right to now say,
“Either Congress will do it,
or I will do it.”

To Sir, with Love

Not Some, it’s, All Soul’s Day!

< ..>

we’ve but to remember
the good
in those bad old days
time is the imprinter
also the eraser

of course our dead are always with us
until we are dead and with them

who can deny the rich man riches
it is his turn to learn the life
of opulence
and his turn
to be tested

yeah funny it’s all a test
awareness coming only
when we fail
failure comes only
when we gain consciousness
thus opening
the door to success

how many years has the human species
successfully survived
whatever the count
evolution of a species does not end
when identified and named

o my country men and women
lend not an ear to thumpers
of someone else’s ideology
the age of reason is ours
let us celebrate the living and the dead

we are
